We are currently conducting a MRI study looking at anatomical and functional brain changes during adolescence. | | Aim of Study | Perhaps the greatest challenge during the early teen years is the demand to evolve with the constantly changing expectations of the environment, interpersonal relationships, and the self that take center stage during adolescence. The characterization of age-associated changes in brain structure and function in healthy children and adolescents has the potential to increase our understanding of normal development, additionally this knowledge is critical to the identification of neurobiological anomalies associated with behavioral pathology. | | Inclusion Criteria | MALE AND FEMALE TEENAGERS

| | Other Info | What is an MRI?
MRI is way of seeing the inside of the body by using a large magnet, radio waves and powerful computers. A MRI can help us visualize body tissues in a different way. MRI images are highly detailed and allow us to really look inside of a person's body. It is almost like taking cuts or slices of the body but in a "virtual" yet highly accurate way on the computer. By using recent advances in MR technology we are able to look at both structure and function within the developing brain.
What is it like to have an MRI?
The MRI machine has a tunnel around which resides a magnet. The participant, lying on their back on a sliding table, is moved into the tunnel. There is an intercom in the tunnel ensuring constant 2-way communication between the technician and the participant. Cameras allow the participant to be seen at all times. While the magnet is working it makes a loud banging noise. For this reason ear pugs are worn to help muffle this noise.
Different studies ask different questions about the brain, so you might be asked to do different things while in a MRI. Our laboratory generally has participants do a few different tasks by viewing pictures or stimuli and pressing buttons depending on what they think or feel about them.
Here are a few examples of what you might be asked to do during an MRI at our lab:
Study one--participants view a number of human faces displaying different types of facial affect. They are asked to identity specific affective expressions.
Study two -- in this study we ask participants to either remember or forget different pictures. These pictures are a series of images that have been rated for their varying degrees of emotional intensity.
Study three-- participants are presented with two pictures simultaneously. They are asked to make rapid subjective decisions (via button press) about which picture they like better, or think is "cooler".
Are there any risks to me getting an MRI?
MRI does not use any radiation. MRI does not pose any risks unless the participant has any kind of implanted metal objects in the body. Thus all subjects are asked a number of questions to ensure their safety.

Study 248 :BRAIN IMAGING & BEHAVIOR STUDIES New Hampshire

| Type of Study | We are studying performance in various behavioral tasks. Behavioral experiments will require viewing a computer display and pressing buttons based upon what is displayed on the screen. Imaging experiments are a safe and noninvasive method for studying how the brain is involved in various tasks. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measures changes in blood flow within the brain. These changes are related to changes in activity within different brain areas. These experiments will involve laying in the scanner while performing the task.
