Study 460 :BRAIN IMAGING Washington
|
|
|
|
| Type of Study | Looking for individuals willing to participate in one of our fMRI scanning experiments.
The academic domain of social cognition attempts to understand and explain how the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of others. Social cognition operates in dynamic interpersonal behavior, i.e., it involves at least two agents who represent each other. However, much of social cognition occurs at an implicit (automatic) level.
Research in our laboratory focuses on the cognitive neuroscience of empathy, imitation, and perspective taking, all essential aspects of human social communication which are involved in intersubjective transactions between self and others. Furthermore, we consider that these processes are fundamental to compassionate interaction and serve as the foundation of culture. All projects apply a combination of behavioral techniques and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in adults and children to achieve a better understanding of these processes with the aim to provide new insights into developmental psychopathology.
Brain Imaging Studies usually involve either a PET Scan or MRI Scan. The
MRI scan does NOT use any radiation, instead the MRI scanner uses magnetic
fields to takes pictures of your body. The MRI will take images of your brain that show which areas are working when you think. For these studies,
you lie inside the MRI scanner for approx 1 hour, and are asked to perform mental tasks while the scanner takes pictures of your brain at work. You may be strapped down to prevent you from moving during the scan. During the scan you will here a loud knocking sound, but you will not feel anything.
This is not the researchers , its the MACHINE!
Because of the magnetic field used by the MRI scanner, you will be required to remove all metal objects from your body, including jewellery.
You will not be able to participate if you have metal implants or extensive dental work.
| | Aim of Study | Our research should help to illuminate the neural and psychological bases of several unique features of the human mind, with broad implications for cognitive neuroscience and, in the long run, developmental psychology, clinical psychology, education, and even social policy.

| Type of Study | What is a standardized patient
A Simulated/Standardized Patient (SP) is a person who has been coached to
accurately and consistently recreate the history, personality, physical
findings, and emotional structure and response pattern of an actual
patient at a particular point in time.
Standardized Patients are used in the training and evaluation of health
care professionals including: medical, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, and
public health students. As a Standardized Patient, you will be interviewed
and examined, just as you would by your family doctor, by male and female
health-care students. In the patient role, you may see several (4-12)
students on a one-to-one basis during an evaluation session or there may
be a group of students (4-7) working with you in a controlled teaching
session.
The Standardized Patient Program hires a moderate
number of SPs throughout the year for participation in programs such as
those described above. The UW SPP interviews and hires only when there is
a specific opening, however, you may submit an application at any time..

Study 462 :Plasma Donation Centers 1 Washington
|
|
|
|
| Type of Study | IS IT SAFE TO DONATE PLASMA
Donating plasma is a very safe procedure with minimal or no side effects | | Aim of Study | How is my plasma used?
The plasma that is collected at your center is manufactured into a wide variety of life-saving products that benefit thousands of people everyday. Plasma is used in the treatment of serious disorders such as hemophilia and immune system deficiencies, and to make products used to help treat and prevent diseases like tetanus, rabies, measles, rubella and hepatitis B.
For example, those who suffer from certain forms of hemophilia lack the natural clotting factors that help stop bleeding after sustaining acute or other injuries. Plasma-based products are used to treat people with this disorder so that they may lead normal, active lives.
In addition, hospitals and emergency rooms all over the world use plasma-derived albumin in the treatment of traumatic injuries such as shock and severe burns.
It is important to remember that plasma is not a substance that can be produced in a laboratory or some other artificial environment. It can only be obtained from healthy adults. When you donate plasma, you are helping to save lives.

| | Area | Bellingham,Washington | | Duration | On your first visit, the whole process, including a physical exam and the plasma donation, usually takes about two hours. On subsequent visits, you can anticipate spending approximately an hour and a half in the center.
| | Reimbursement | EARN UP TO 200 DOLLARS A MONTH | | Other Info | SO MAYBE YOUR A LITTLE NERVOUS ABOUT COMING IN FOR YOUR FIRST PLASMA DONATION
The best way to overcome your fear is to understand what happens during the donation process.
Plasma is collected through a process called "plasmapheresis." When you come in to donate, a needle is placed in your vein and your blood is pumped into a specialized spinning device that separates the plasma from the other whole blood components, such as red and white blood cells and platelets. While the plasma is collected, the other blood components are filtered into a reservoir. Once the reservoir is full, your red and white blood cells and platelets are returned to your body.
Throughout the process, the system automatically alternates between collection and replacement until the predetermined amount of plasma, based on your weight, is obtained.
The tubing and all other collection supplies that come in contact with your blood are discarded and replaced with new, sterile materials each time a donation procedure is performed.
HOW OFTEN CAN I DONATE PLASMA
The body replaces the plasma removed during the donation process quickly; therefore, healthy individuals can donate as often as twice in a seven-day period, with at least 48 hours between donations.
