The influence of genetic variability on arterial function. Genes are molecules that we inherit from our parents. We are investigating the influence of genetic variability on arterial function in young (19-35 years) healthy adults. Role of the renin angiotensin system in cardiovascular health. The renin angiotensin system regulates blood pressure by affecting the kidneys and blood vessels. In this study we intend to improve cardiovascular function by reducing the activity of the renin angiotensin system which should reduce oxidative stress especially in older adults. ON HOLD. Beta-adrenergic receptor responsiveness and resting metabolism in middle-aged and older humans. As we get older the amount of calories we burn at rest goes down. We have recently shown that this is partly due to less help from the nervous system. We are looking for men and women over the ages of 55-79 who do not exercise on a regular basis. Influence of the nervous system on Metabolism After Eating. Metabolism increases when you eat food (thermic effect of food; TEF). We believer this increase in metabolism is partly due to stimulation by the nervous system. The activity of the nervous system changes with age and with habitual exercise. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of age and habitual physical activity on the contribution of the nervous system to increased metabolism following a meal. We are looking for men and women between the ages of 18-35 and 50-79.
