Study 1335 :Visual processing in migraine
London
Type of StudyThis study explores visual perception in migraine and healthy control groups. It involves computer based tests of your vision and is conducted at Birkbeck in central London. The study is non-invasive and requires a single visit to Birkbeck. The session lasts up to 90 minutes. If eligible, volunteers may be invited to return for future research studies later in the year.
Aim of StudyTo explore whether there is evidence of changes in the visual system in migraine. If we can document any differences we aim then to identify mechanisms involved in migraine, including the mechanisms of visually triggered migraine. (Be assured that we do NOT try to induce migraine at any time, indeed, the tests are not invasive or painful in any way.) It is hoped that the research will also help with the development of visual tests to aid diagnosis and also to inform the development of more specific treatments.
Inclusion CriteriaVolunteers must:
- experience migraine at least 10 times a year
- have good eyesight in each eye (with or without glasses). Ideally acuity should be 6/6 (20/20) in each eye - as a guide, you should be able to read the small print on the back of a cd case held at arms length.
- be reasonably fit and healthy
- have no medical condition that affects the central nervous system vision (e.g. no epilepsy, MS, etc)
- have no medical condition that can affect vision (e.g. no diabetes, dyslexia)
- must not be taking regular medication like beta-blockers, antidepressants or antihistamines.
Exclusion Criteria- very infrequent migraine
- poor eyesight in either eye
- daily medication like beta-blockers, antidepressants or antihistamines
- history of squint or strabismus
- any condition (other than migraine) that can affect vision (epilepsy, MS, diabetes, dysexia, etc)
AreaBirkbeck is part of the University of London and is located on Malet St, Bloomsbury, WC1E 7HX.

The nearest tube is Russell Square. Goodge St, Tottenham Court Road and Euston are also close by.
DurationThe testing takes up to 90 minutes. This study is one of a number of studies that will continue throughout the year. We hope to test people on a number of occasions, perhaps once every 4 months or so (though of course anyone who starts to help is under no obligation to continue).
ReimbursementWe give volunteers a contribution of £10 to cover their time and expenses.
