| Type of Study | MALE & FEMALE VOLUNTEERS SUFFERING FROM HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE FOR BLOOD VESSELS/EXERCISE STUDY | | Aim of Study | Nitric oxide is a substance produced by human blood vessels and serves as a chemical messenger with a wide range of function. Among its numerous biological roles, it causes dilatation of blood vessels and, as such, is an important regulator of blood pressure itself. Nitric oxide activity is reduced in different conditions, such us high blood pressure. Sildenafil citrate is a drug that acts by improving and prolonging the effects of nitric oxide on blood vessels. We therefore wish to further investigate sildenafil actions in subjects with high blood pressure, in particular with regard to its effects on exercise capacity, assessed by a simple step test and a bike exercise. | | Inclusion Criteria | Age between 18 and 70 years
Appropriate blood pressure range:
systolic BP equal or higher than 140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP equal or higher than 90 mmHg
Written informed consent

History of heart or vessels disease within the last 6 months
Total cholesterol >6.5 mmol/L
Current alcohol abuse
Diabetes
Asthma
Taking any drugs which cannot be withdrawn for the purpose of the study
Clinically significant abnormality on screening blood test
Contraindication to strenuous exercise
Regular exercise training
Presence of other relevant medical conditions.
