Brigham and Women’s Hospital is currently seeking participants for a sleep research study. Participants must be willing to stay in the hospital around the clock for 28 days and nights. The purpose of the study is to see what determines how much sleep a person needs. To do this, we will study people who regularly sleep 7 hours or less each night.
Aim of StudyWe hope to learn what biological factors (things in the body) determine how much time a person sleeps.
Inclusion Criteria Males and females
Ages 18-35 years
Healthy
Sleep 7 hours or less per night
Non-smokers
Must have passed eligibility test on the menu bar

Exclusion Criteria Current use of medications except birth control
Sleep disorders
Family or personal history of mental illness

Duration Prior to entering the study we will have you go through a screening process, which involves paperwork, a physical exam, lab work (blood and urine samples), an assessment with a psychologist, and an overnight stay in a sleep laboratory. The screening can be completed in 4-6 visits over a period of approximately one month. You would also be asked to keep a log of your bed and wake times during this time. Following the screening process you may begin the study based on your availability and the schedule at the Hospital.

What is PET?
PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a non-invasive diagnostic scanning technique that provides researchers and clinicians with visual images of organ function. PET scans can detect biochemical changes in body tissues before structural damage occurs from disease. This information allows clinicians to be proactive in their treatments and enables researchers to detect early biomarkers of disease that can aid diagnosis and advance drug development. We are currently utilizing PET to study the serotonin, norepinephrine, and cannabinoid neurotransmitter systems in the following study populations:

Healthy Controls: male or female subjects between 18-55 years of age, without a history of any type of neurological illness or injury or any current or prior mental health or substance use disorder.

PTSD: male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Individuals who have had reactions to major traumatic life events are also encouraged to participate.

Depression: male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from depression.

Alcohol Dependence: male or female subjects between 18-50 years of age, suffering from alcohol dependence or in partial remission. Subjects may participate in an inpatient or outpatient setting, but must be abstinent from alcohol for 4-6 weeks prior to MR and PET scanning.
Aim of StudyAim of the studies: to examine the association between disorders such as PTSD, depression, and alcohol dependence, and brain function using MRI and PET.

Location of the Study:
Yale University, New Haven, CT and VA Medical Center, West Haven, CT
Inclusion Criteria We are looking for male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are healthy or suffering from depression, PTSD, or alcohol dependence. In addition, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 PET scan and 1 MRI scan.
Exclusion Criteria Individuals on any medication or have medical/neurological illnesses, females who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do you or someone you know suffer from alcohol dependence?

If so and you are not currently taking any medications to treat your alcohol dependence or any medical illness, you may be eligible to participate in brain imaging studies being conducted by Yale University School of Medicine in conjunction with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (West Haven, CT) to examine the association between alcohol dependence and brain function.
Aim of StudyThe aim of the study is to examine the association between alcohol dependence and brain function.


Inclusion Criteria We are looking for male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from alcohol dependence. Furthermore, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 PET scan and 1 MRI scan.
Exclusion Criteria Individuals on any medication or have medical/neurological illnesses, females who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Individuals with any additional addiction disorders.

Other InfoWhen you are selected for a study you will be given a small dose of the trial medicine. Our doctors and nurses will then monitor the effect the drug has on your body by obtaining frequent measurements of blood pressure, pulse and ECG.

Blood and urine samples will also be obtained at regular intervals, to assess how quickly the drug is absorbed by, and passed out of, your body.

As your safety is the primary concern, you will stay under clinics care for the duration of the study and this will include some overnight stays.

Aim of StudyThe aim of the study is to examine the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and serotonin function.
Inclusion Criteria We are looking for male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or depression. Individuals who have had reactions to major traumatic life events are also encouraged to participate. Furthermore, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 PET scan and 1 MRI scan.
Exclusion Criteria Individuals on any medication or have medical/neurological illnesses, females who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Area Primarily on the East coast and Northeast regions including: CT, MA, NY, NJ, NH, ME, and PA.
Duration 2-3 days, which include one day of screening and evaluation, one to two days for the MRI scan and PET scan.
Reimbursement One day screening is $75, PET scan is $600 and MRI scan is $50. Therefore, participants can make up to $725.
