Study 263 :BRAIN IMAGING STUDIES Massachusetts
Type of Study	Volunteer for participation in our research studies.Opportunities are available to participate in behavioral studies, involving paper-and-pencil tests and tasks on computers. Volunteers may also participate in studies that use magnetic resonance imaging.
Aim of Study	All of our studies are designed to help shed light on cognitive function across the life span and to extend knowledge about age-related brain changes. There are two different kinds of tasks for which we would welcome your participation, and information on both is provided below. Please note that none of these studies is invasive or involve the use of drugs, and most involve only a single session.
Inclusion Criteria	You must be either between 18 and 35 or 60 and 85 yrs. of age, A native speaker of English Must have normal or corrected-to-normal hearing and vision. Must not have a history of heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. Must not have untreated high blood pressure, or be taking any mood-altering drugs. Must be right handed Must not be claustrophobic. Duration	Our fMRI studies involve approximately 2 hours of scanning, plus an additional 30 minutes before and after the scans for preparation and post-experiment debriefing. During the first half-hour in the scanner you will simply lie still while we take structural images; during the remainder of the time you will perform simple cognitive tasks (e.g., looking at pictures and words on a screen).

Study 258 :Standardized Patient Program Massachusetts
Type of Study	What is a standardized patient? A Standardized Patient (SP) is a healthy lay person or a person with fixed physical findings who has been: Taught to teach basic physical exam skills and communication skills and/or Trained to portray a real patient's case in learning or testing situation. The SP is trained to present a patient history and sometimes patient's symptoms. The SP can also be trained to portray a family member of another patient; for example a mother, daughter, or spouse. Our SPs behave as real patients might in a given situation, so students can practice with them before seeing real patients in an office of hospital setting.
Aim of Study	Why use Standardized Patients? Availability. A particular patient problem or scenario is available at any time or any place. The student/teacher does not have to hope someone with a particular issue or problem will show up and agreed to be seen by a student. Faculty can create optimal learning encounters based on student and curricular needs instead of modifying the learning experience to the available patients's problem.

Other Info	For Standardized Patients There are several personal and life style qualities that successful SPs have in common: Flexible work schedule: the needs of the program vary from month to month. I can sometimes tell you a year in advance when I will need you and sometimes I will call the week or day before. Ease with people: because we work with so many different students in so many different stages of training, it is important to really like people and like working with students. Comfort with your body: you need to be willing to have physical exams done, sometimes more than once during a session. Comfortable "being on stage": while you are not physically on a stage, you are performing a part. You are likely to perform that same part repeatedly within a 4-8 hour period as each student gets a chance to interact with your case. Good observation skills: as you will be giving the students feedback about their performance, you will need to be able to be "in role" and observing at the same time. Good memory: you will need to remember what student #1 did and then what student #6 did. Enjoy working with a group of people who are truly committed to making a difference in the education of our future physicians, one student at a time. Other Info	MRI is safe and comfortable for most people, with only a few exceptions. People who have electrically, magnetically or mechanically activated implants (such as cardiac pacemakers), or those with metal in their body (such as clips on blood vessels in their brain, or other metal fragments) should not have an MRI because the devices may move or not function properly. However, persons with metal dental fillings may have an MRI. The MR scanner is a powerful tube-shaped magnet that uses radio waves to create computerized images of the brain and body. Because the magnet is always on, you will be instructed not to bring any metal objects into the magnet suite, as these objects may become airborne and injure someone. The MR scanner magnet will also erase the magnetic strip on credit cards, so you should leave your wallet outside as well. Because the MRI study involves imaging procedures that are very sensitive to motion, you may be asked to use a "bite bar" during scanning. A bite bar is a piece of plexiglass covered with sterile dental-impression material. You will make an impression of your teeth in the bite bar, and rest your teeth in this impression for the duration of the study to help immobilize your head. You will not be able to wear your eye glasses in the MR scanner. If the study requires that you read or view images and you require vision correction, you should inform the investigator when you sign up for the study, and you may be fitted with magnet compatible eye glasses. Because MR images may be distorted by metal in the mouth, you may be asked to leave any removable dental devices such as retainers, removable bridges, or dentures outside the magnet suite. Study 285 :BRAIN IMAGING RESEARCH Massachusetts
Type of Study	Brain Imaging Studies usually involve either a PET Scan or MRI Scan. The MRI scan does NOT use any radiation, instead the MRI scanner uses magnetic fields to takes pictures of your body. The MRI will take images of your brain that show which areas are working when you think. For these studies, you to lie inside the MRI scanner and be asked to perform mental tasks while the scanner take pictures of your brain at work. You may be stapped down to prevent you from moving during the scan. During the scan the machine makes a loud knocking sound, but you will not feel anything. Because of the magnetic field used by the MRI scanner, you will be required to remove all metal objects from your body, including jewelery. You will not be able to participate if you have metal implants or extensive dental work.

Study 282 :The Emotion Lab - Emotion Research Massachusetts
Type of Study	The Emotion Lab usually has several different studies running simultaneously during the academic year and summer sessions, so what exactly the study requires depends on the the current project. All of our studies deal with how emotion affects attention at different stages in the adult lifespan. Typically, Emotion Lab studies involve: Filling out several personality measures about how you feel Completing some cognitive tests and puzzles Watching a computer presentation while having your eyes tracked - sometimes while doing a task
Aim of Study	1)Eye-tracking technology to study attentional biases that may facilitate individual and age differences in emotional regulation. Eye-tracking is used as the primary means of quantifying visual attention. Having your eyes tracked is a noninvasive and unique experience. The process involves watching a series of images on a computer monitor while a camera records the location and movements of your eyes. A lightweight head sensor unit is worn (the unit is like a Velcro headband) to relay the location of the participants head in three-dimensional space to the camera. The photograph below displays the typical setup for a participant in an eye-tracking experiment. 2)There appear to be meaningful differences between individuals with different personality profiles and between individuals of different ages in happiness and well-being. For example, optimistic individuals appear happier than their more pessimistic peers, whereas older individuals have been shown in recent research to show surprisingly high levels of well-being compared to their younger counterparts.
Inclusion Criteria	We are always especially looking for healthy adults age 60 and over to volunteer in our studies and would love to have you visit our lab! Type of Study	Non invasive research . Listen to a short story through headphones and when it is finished, answer questions about the story. Listen to short sentences at different speeds and after each sentence, repeat as much of the sentence as you can. Listen to a sentence with extra noise in the background, then repeat as much of the sentence as you can remember. You will have an opportunity to learn about human memory and cognition, as well as make a valuable contribution to science. Besides, there's always fresh coffee and tea available for our volunteers!

Inclusion Criteria	MALES AND FEMALES 50 YEARS AND ABOVE MUST HAVE GOOD VISION AND HEARING MUST BE A REGULAR DRIVER MUST HAVE PASSED INSTANT ELIGIBILITY TEST ON THE MENU BAR .

Duration	SHORT ASSIGNMENTS OF A COUPLE OF HOURS , MAYBE MORE

Other Info	For most, driving is the key to independence and personal identity. By integrating human factors, cognitive psychology, gerontology, medicine, engineering and planning, the AgeLab conducts research that examines the many factors relating to older drivers. We study and experiment with new technologies that help enhance safety behind the wheel. Other work examines the risks of health and medicine to the driving task. A major pillar of the AgeLab's research is understanding how older adults make decisions to drive and/or cease driving, including how they perceive their own driving ability and the role of families in the driving decision.

Study 255 :Vision & Cognition Laboratory - Brain Research Massachusetts
Type of Study	The way that we learn about Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and others, is from participation by people (like you!). You can make an important contribution by helping scientists understand these disorders. You can participate in a research study.
Inclusion Criteria	MIDDLE AGED AND OLDER Must be Right Handed Must not have had any major past illnesses . Must not have a history of depression anxiety or mental illness . Must have no family history of mental illnesses . Must not have poor eye sight . Must not have a history of substance abuse . Must have not had serious injury or bumps to the head MUST HAVE PASSED INSTANT ELIGIBILITY ON THE MENU BAR .
Area	Volunteers from the BOSTON,Massachusetts area only .
Reimbursement	We offer a stipend and free parking for participation in many of our studies.
Other Info	Participation in our research does not involve taking medications nor other substances. None of our studies are designed to be painful or uncomfortable for our participants. In fact, many people who participate find the experience to be interesting and educational.
