What is PET?
PET (Positron Emission Tomography) is a non-invasive diagnostic scanning technique that provides researchers and clinicians with visual images of organ function. PET scans can detect biochemical changes in body tissues before structural damage occurs from disease. This information allows clinicians to be proactive in their treatments and enables researchers to detect early biomarkers of disease that can aid diagnosis and advance drug development. We are currently utilizing PET to study the serotonin, norepinephrine, and cannabinoid neurotransmitter systems in the following study populations:

Healthy Controls: male or female subjects between 18-55 years of age, without a history of any type of neurological illness or injury or any current or prior mental health or substance use disorder.

PTSD: male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Individuals who have had reactions to major traumatic life events are also encouraged to participate.

Depression: male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from depression.

Alcohol Dependence: male or female subjects between 18-50 years of age, suffering from alcohol dependence or in partial remission. Subjects may participate in an inpatient or outpatient setting, but must be abstinent from alcohol for 4-6 weeks prior to MR and PET scanning.

Aim of Study

Aim of the studies: to examine the association between disorders such as PTSD, depression, and alcohol dependence, and brain function using MRI and PET.

Inclusion Criteria

We are looking for male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are healthy or suffering from depression, PTSD, or alcohol dependence. In addition, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 PET scan and 1 MRI scan.

Exclusion Criteria

Individuals on any medication or have medical/neurological illnesses, females who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The studies will consist of one screening session followed by one magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan and up to 3 positron emission tomography (PET) studies to measure brain function. Participation in the study will last approximately 2-3 days, depending on availability and scheduling.

ALCOHOL DEPENDENCY STUDIES

Do YOU Think You May Suffer

Do you or someone you know suffer from alcohol dependence?

If so and you are not currently taking any medications to treat your alcohol dependence or any medical illness, you may be eligible to participate in brain imaging studies being conducted by Yale University School of Medicine in conjunction with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (West Haven, CT) to examine the association between alcohol dependence and brain function.

Aim of Study

The aim of the study is to examine the association between alcohol dependence and brain function.

Inclusion Criteria

We are looking for male or female subjects, ages 18-55, who are suffering from alcohol dependence. Furthermore, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 PET scan and 1 MRI scan.

Exclusion Criteria

Individuals on any medication or have medical/neurological illnesses, females who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Individuals with any additional addiction disorders.

Duration

2-3 days, which include one day of screening and evaluation, one to two days for the MRI scan and PET scanning.

Reimbursement

Completion of one-day screening and interview $75
Completion of MRI scan $50
Completion of PET scan $600

- Emotionally numb or detached from relationships or surroundings

If you said yes to one or more of these symptoms, you may be suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder or as it is commonly referred as PTSD. Currently, Yale University School of Medicine in conjunction with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (West Haven, CT) is conducting brain imaging studies that will examine the association between posttraumatic stress disorder and brain function.

The aim of the study is to examine the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and brain function.

Individuals who have had reactions to major traumatic life events are also encouraged to participate. Furthermore, participants must have a willingness to participate in imaging studies including 1 MRI scan and a minimum of 1 PET scan.

If so, you may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. The Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine is conducting a study of an investigational medication that may help relieve your PTSD symptoms. You may be eligible to participate if you have PTSD and are 21-55 years old.

Inclusion Criteria

• Have experienced a traumatic or life threatening event
• Be 21-55 years of age
• Be experiencing anxiety as a result of the traumatic event
• Be willing to taper off any psychiatric medications if currently being taken

Exclusion Criteria

Not be pregnant or nursing
• Not have an unstable medical condition or illness
• Not be currently taking drugs or abusing alcohol

This is a research study of an investigational medication for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. We are looking for participants who have unfortunately been through a traumatic or life-threatening experience and are by affected by it. The investigational medication we are testing is Ketamine, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as an anesthetic, but is not approved for the treatment of PTSD. The study involves two separate overnight stays at the Mount Sinai Hospital each followed by 5 follow-up visits in our clinic. In this study we will compare the effects of Ketamine to an anesthetic called midazolam. This comparison is necessary because we’re trying to see if Ketamine is really effective for treating PTSD or if a person feels better simply because they are receiving treatment. Midazolam is a drug that has similar anesthetic effects but has not been shown to treat PTSD or major depressive disorder symptoms. Like Ketamine, Midazolam is not approved for the treatment of PTSD but is approved by the FDA as an anesthetic. As part of the study, there are two overnight visits when you will be given either Ketamine or Midazolam. You will be randomly assigned to one of the drugs for the first overnight stay and will be given the other drug for the second overnight stay. You won’t be told which medication you have received and the research team won’t know either.

Inclusion Criteria

For most studies, participants must be:

A healthy adult, age 18+

Non-smokers or light smokers

No more than 30 lbs overweight

Available to stay in-house on a 24-hour basis for the duration of an in-patient study

Females can on/off the pill and we also need sterilized females .

Must have passed instant eligibility on the menu bar.

Exclusion Criteria

Current or past history of alcohol or substance abuse

Allergies to drugs

Healthy Post Menopausal Females

Surgically Sterilised Females

Females who have had hysterectomy

Aged 18 to 65 yrs.

Exclusion Criteria
