Study Name: CHRONIC REFRACTORY COUGH

Clinics: Barnsley, Blackpool, Cannock, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Teesside

Therapy Area: Chronic Refractory Cough

Gender and Age: Male and Female aged 18 and over

Description:

Chronic refractory cough (CRC), also known as chronic idiopathic cough or unexplained chronic cough is defined as a cough that persists despite guideline-based treatment and affects 8-10% of the adult population. It might be triggered by strong smells, changes in temperature and excessive talking and the condition can have a significant impact on quality of life.

The trial medication is called orvepitant and will be taken orally, once a day for 12 weeks out of the 18-week trial period. The purpose of this trial is to see if orvepitant reduces the need to cough, and the trial will also assess the safety of the drug and how it is absorbed and used within the body. It is believed that chronic refractory cough is due to increased sensitivity of the airway cough reflex and so it is hoped that orvepitant will help reduce the need to cough by lessening this increased sensitivity. As part of the trial process, you will be required to wear a cough monitor for 24 hours on 4 separate occasions.
